Cirencester Ramblers

The weather was dry but windy for the 17 walkers, including members from Bristol, Swindon and Gloucester, who set off from Great Witcombe Roman Villa,

Having crossed over the resevoirs we followed footpaths to Flyup 417. This is a mountain biking mecca and although the path has a number of diversions - to keep walkers well away from the speeding cyclists - the waymarks had recently been improved, possibly for our visit.

Some walkers stopped at the small café, where at least one walker enjoyed a millionaires coffee. We continued (slowly!) up the Cotswold Escarpment and had lunch at Barrow Wake.

Due to the very strong wind eating food and looking at the view could not be enjoyed at the same time. We then headed south along the Cotswold Way. This is a delightful route going through beech woods with glimpses across Gloucester to the Malverns and the Black Mountains. Due to time constraints we were unable to climb up to the Iron age earthworks, but we were able to stand and look up at Coopers Hill, the site used for cheese rolling.

Almost all walkers were then able to enjoy a very small version of the famous 8 pound Double Gloucester cheese used for the event.
