On Sunday 26th February 2023, sunny but chilly weather saw a group of 16 Members and 1 guest do a 6 mile walk starting in the village of Aldsworth. We passed the small village green which has a war memorial and also a plaque to Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Roscoe, who was fatally injured when his plane crashed in a nearby field in 1942.
The group left the village and we were soon in open countryside with enormous fields which are due to the area being unenclosed from Saxon times until 1973.
We headed towards the former RAF Windrush, passing some woodland areas, and we had a lunch stop at the former airfield. Surviving buildings from World War 2 include 2 hangars, a pill box and a preserved control tower which contains a plaque to Flight Sergeant Bruce Hancock who was killed deliberately crashing his plane into a German bomber. There is another plaque which describes the brief history of the airfield.
The walk continued across the former airfield, also surrounded by vast fields, and entered a wooded area, passing a derelict barn, before reaching the B4255. After a short stretch of road walking, we crossed over the road and climbed up to the hamlet of Ladbarrow before taking a lane affording superb views of the surrounding countryside back to the starting point.
