On Sunday 12th June 12 ramblers met in the Old Railyard car park in Tetbury. It was a lovely summer’s day with sun, clouds and a light breeze at times. Ideal walking conditions to walk the 10 miles /approx. 25,500 steps.
We started off along the old railway path towards Eastcourt Park, then the old, tree lined bridle route of Wormwell Lane. Thanks to a farmer finally adding new footpath signs we followed footpaths through fields, rich in wildflowers, with views of Westonbirt House/School.
In Westonbirt village we admired the old pump, and cottage gardens with beautiful flowers.
We had a break at the golf club and lunch under the treetop walkway at Westonbirt Arboretum, learning that the Arboretum was created by Robert Holford and son George 200yrs ago, as well as a wonderful place to visit and enjoy. It is important in world research and conservation.
We returned to Tetbury on the Monarch’s Way now a long distance path locally going via Stratford, Moreton, Stow and Cirencester on to Sussex. The route King Charles 11 took after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester.
Along the route we saw attractive houses in the distance and signs of Highgrove nearby. Thank you all who joined me for a lovely days walk.
