On Sunday 6th December 19 walkers set off on a 7½ mile walk from Callow Hill, near Brinkworth; but as the weather detoriated it was cut short to 6½ miles. Despite the rain, mud and cold we all survived!
The walk was entitled “The Battlefields of Brinkworth”. Our first battlefield was the Brinkworth section of “Stop Line Red” – the Second World War anti-tank defence line hat linked the River Thames defences to “Stop Line Green” – the Bristol outer defences. Emphatic evidence of how seriously the threat of a German invasion was taken.
“Battlefield Two” – was the “battle between a village’s need for a village hall car park and the landowner’s desire to build executive housing. “Battlefield Three” was between horse riders and dog walkers over the state of a path.
