The opening of the footbridge, which has a commemorative plaque, was on Saturday 29th September, with 20 supporters present. The opening ribbon was cut by Cath Tainton, niece of Peter and Jean Clemence.

Close to Preston village was a narrow wooden bridge over a small stream. This bridge has now been removed to be replaced with a wider and longer bridge which was funded through a legacy left by Jean Clemence a founder member of Cirencester Ramblers. The new Clemence Bridge remembers Jean and records the fifty years since Cirencester Ramblers was founded.

The new structure is a Polydeck footbridge, this is constructed from 850 recycled plastic bottles and unlike the wooden structure it replaces, should last until the next Century.
The bridge is on a public footpath (Preston Footpath 12) and being located on the edge of Cirencester it improves access to a number of local circular routes plus, via field paths, to Ampney Crucis and beyond.

The project was an initiative of Cirencester Ramblers and has taken more than two years to come to fruition. Several sites and other options (benches or gates to replace stiles) were considered and rejected. Eventually this site was identified and progress was made with the support of the landowner and Gloucestershire County Council Public Rights of Way Team. However, even after the bridge was constructed and the various permissions granted installation was again delayed until last month by wet weather.
